TPN's initiatives will further boost productivity in tourism industry

PUTRAJAYA, June 4 (Bernama) -- Initiatives undertaken by Tourism Productivity Nexus (TPN) in collaboration with stakeholders especially the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) will further boost productivity of the tourism industry.

TPN chairman Uzaidi Udanis said the positive and promising increase of Malaysia’s tourist arrivals in the first quarter of this year, was a good indication of the efforts put in place by MOTAC and the industry.

“TPN and Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (MITA) have since 2018, been actively working towards improving the industry to increase the sector’s productivity” he said in a statement here today.

With all the initiatives in place, it was hoped that tourist arrivals continue to improve and hopefully could exceed the 30 million target by 2020, the statement said.

TPN’s regular engagement with the industry and understanding of the issues and challenges have allowed constructive feedback focusing on a better overall tourist experience.

“Capitalising on the ‘low-hanging fruit’, such as the Chinese expatriate market at an estimated 90,000 in Brunei, the request for introduction of the Visa on Arrival (VoA) is one of the initiatives that was mooted by TPN to increase the number of tourists to Sarawak particularly Miri.

“To lure the Chinese expatriates on a regular basis would be a huge opportunity for the industry. Easing Visa application for the growing Chinese and Indian nationals has also been one of the constant topics of engagement between the industry and MOTAC,” said the statement.

Enhancing tourist experience is one of the objectives of the industry, and to achieve this objective, TPN with industry players have gone to the ground to assess the challenges at the land entry point primarily the Sultan Abu Bakar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) at the Second Link.

“Report and recommendation are being drafted to be forwarded to the relevant stakeholders,” the statement said.

Other initiatives, such as providing more creative tourism products and improving the services provided by the tourism players as well as efficiency via programmes namely Showcasing Tourism Products (STP), Inbound Tourism Bootcamp (ITB) and Standards and Certification Programme for Tourism Products and Services are also on the drawing board, according to TPN.

In line with the Malaysia Productivity Blueprint (MPB) initiatives towards enhancing the productivity of the tourism industry, TPN was established since 2017 to tackle the challenges in the tourism industry such as workforce, industry structure and business environment.

TPN is a platform led by the industry players under the Malaysia Productivity Blueprint (MPB) aims to boost the growth and productivity of the tourism industry at enterprise, sectoral and national levels.
