Lexis Hibiscus makes Port Dickson a surprising draw for meetings, incentives

image: www.lexishibiscuspd.com

Despite its location in a leisure destination relatively unknown to international markets, Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson has acquired enough meetings and incentives in its first year of operations for the segment to make up 15 per cent of total business.

In an interview with TTGmice, Steve Woon, Lexis Hotel Group, senior vice president, sales & marketing, said the hotel has been attracting local, regional and Middle Eastern groups for meetings and incentives, with attendance ranging from 40 to 450 people.

He believes that the upscale property's advantage lies in its accessibility, located about 90 minutes by car from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and klia2.

Furthermore, with its location along the route commonly taken to popular southern Malaysian cities such as Malacca, Woon believes that Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson makes an ideal stopover destination and easy add-on to any itinerary.

The property features 639 keys, made up of 117 tower rooms and 522 seawater villas and satisfies event requirements with two sea-facing pillarless ballrooms and 10 function rooms with natural lighting.

Agreeing that Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson is a draw for corporate clients, Adam Kamal, CEO, Olympik Holidays, said: “Water-based activities including fish feeding from glass bottomed boats, sunset cruises on a catamaran, and private charters provided by third-party operators are a plus point for (business event) groups staying at the resort.”

Arokia Das, senior manager at Luxury Tours Malaysia, said there are enough nature- and water-based attractions in the destination to "easily" keep incentive groups occupied for two or three nights, but urged the local tourism authorities to "leverage on (Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson) to promote the destination in the international scene and attract repeat visitors to Malaysia".

MITA nudges Malaysian agents towards Chinese market

Uzaidi: working with Tourism Malaysia on B2B networking sessions in China

Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (MITA) is encouraging more inbound agents to cater to the China market to ensure there are enough suppliers to support the expected influx of Chinese tourists this year, according to the association’s president Uzaidi Udanis.

“By getting new agents involved, we believe Malaysia can create niche itineraries and promote new destinations to encourage more repeat visitors,” Uzaidi said.

He added: “We are also trying to attract agents with non-Chinese speaking staff to enter this market as many Chinese travel agents these days are able to communicate in English. Mandarin is no longer an essential requirement.”

For a start, MITA is collaborating with Tourism Malaysia to organise a B2B networking session in Xiamen from May 22 to 25, following the Malaysian government's announcement to open a new visa centre in the city to improve tourism numbers to one million from the Fujian province itself.

There are also plans to hold similar B2B networking sessions in other Chinese cities in 2H2017.

Uzaidi said: “MITA hope to keep costs below RM5,000 (US$1,138) per participant and this will cover airfare, ground arrangements and the B2B session. By keeping costs low, we hope to encourage new and small inbound agents to participate.

"We understand many are unable to promote at overseas travel trade events where a table at the Malaysia pavilion will cost anything between RM6,000 to RM20,000, (excluding) airfare and ground arrangements.”

Greater transparency for Muslim travellers with new hotel standard

Salam Standard has launched the Premium Hotel Classification scheme which rates hotels based on their number and standard of Muslim-friendly facilities and services, with an emphasis on rigorous hotel checks and audits.

The scheme – which classifies hotels under Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum tiers – aims to improve quality, standards and transparency for Muslim travellers, while boosting the global visibility of accommodation that meet this demographic’s faith-based needs.

For example, at Bronze-rated properties, all rooms have a shower and toilet or bathtub and toilet and a prayer mat and praying direction (Qibla/Kibblat), or they are available on request, whereas Platinum-rated accommodation offers several additional benefits including halal food that is certified by a recognised body, while the entire premises is alcohol free.

Properties or hotel groups will be subject to checks to ensure they meet the required criteria, with audits conducted by a qualified committee of Islamic tourism experts, including Salam Standard representatives.

The committee reserves the right to reject applications if they do not meet the minimum criteria, and will also conduct regular inspections to ensure standards are upheld at Salam Standard-rated properties.

According Salam Standard, the four-tier system will simplify the user experience by providing Muslim travellers using the service or that of sister company Tripfez with clear guidelines on what is offered, safe in the knowledge it has been checked and audited.
