10 Hotels In Malaysia Listed As Candidates For Asean Green Hotel Awards 2014

KUCHING, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has nominated 10 hotels nationwide to receive the Asean Green Hotel Awards, held in conjunction with the Asean Tourism Forum 2014 which began here last Thursday.

The Asean Green Hotel Award was first introduced in 2006.

Tourism and Culture Ministry's industry development division under-secretary Mohd Daud Mohd Arif said so far, 40 hotels in the country had received the award which was introduced to promote environmental awareness.

"The award, like other rewards, will bring pride and dignity to the recipient, as well as promote its own premises. "This is regarded as the best way to improve hotel services, with the awareness of environment conservation," he said in a press conference on the Green Hotel Awards 2014 which will be held here tomorrow.

Also present at the conference was Thailand Tourism and Sports Ministry Director-General Dr Patanachart Kridiborworn.

Meanwhile, Patanachart said 216 hotels across Asean countries had received the prestigious award, adding that 86 more were expected to receive the award this year.

He said the award presentation for the hotels was held every two years, adding that each award lasted for three years for the winner. "And of course, they (the hotels) will try to maintain their quality of service in order to maintain the title (for three years) or else they will lose it," he said.

He explained the committee for the award presentation had initiated a standard to deal with criteria or guidelines which encouraged environmentally-friendly services in the hotel operation.
