Tourism queens speak of home

With the finals for the 16th Miss Tourism International coming soon, five more young women tell us about themselves.
The contestants will be visiting various interesting places in the Klang Valley before the pageant finals which takes place on Dec 31 at the Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa. The pageant will be broadcast live through free-to-air TV and Internet. Today we focus on Miss Armenia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia and Taiwan.
MISS ARMENIA:
Twenty-three-year-old Onga Tsaturina is a medical student and part- time model who likes singing, dancing, reading and cooking.
“The most beautiful city in Armenia is our capital Yerevan. Arches and columns on the facades of buildings are decorated luxuriously with finely covered motifs of ancient ornaments. There are 1,750 fountains, which were built nearly 35 years ago.”
In promoting Yerevan, Tsaturiani recommends that tourists visit its numerous theatres and interesting museums.
MISS NEW ZEALAND:
Gloria Blake is a 20-year-old student from Auckland, who enjoys singing.
“New Zealand as a tourism destination doesn’t attract people for one one specific attraction but the country as a whole. The green, pristine landscape that is New Zealand is so magnificent and differs vastly between the islands; from the snow-cap peaks of the Southern Alps to the black sand beaches and geysers of the North Island.”
However one attraction that Blake would recommend if she has to pick is ‘Middle Earth,’ the Southern Alps made famous by the Lord of the Ringstrilogy. It has the beauty and power that is iconic within New Zealand culture and society.
MISS PHILIPPINES:
A nurse from Zamboanga City, 22-year-old Rizzi Alexis C. Gomez likes to read, play basketball and swim.
“One of the reasons that Filipinos are unique is our undying devotion and strong faith in our religion. I would like to show everyone that Filipinos are not only vibrant and fun-loving but we are also the home of skilful, talented and God-fearing people who help bring out the best of what our country can show and offer everyone around the world.”
Gomez also believes in the importance of education to promote Phillipines’ attractions because it will emphasise the value and importance of preserving the culture and heritage of the country.
MISS RUSSIA:
Anna Volkova from Kazan is a student who also does cheerleading, dancing and horse riding.
“Russia is the biggest country in the world and there are many tourist attractions. For example, Red Square in Moscow, the Tower of Suymbike in Kazan but the main attraction in Russia is nature. It is amazing and beautiful.”
The 21-year-old finds Russia’s main attraction has to be its capital Moscow being an important place in history that now hosts yearly events like the Victory Parade at Red Square.
MISS TAIWAN:
Lin I-Chieh would recommend the Chiayi district as a tourist attraction as it has lots of local cuisines and historical heritage.
The 24-year-old part-time model from Chiayi also said that the “people are warm and friendly” and would welcome everyone to their district with open arms.
“I hope to make use of the mass media and beauty pageants to introduce Taiwan to all the countries so that they can understand Taiwan better and at the same time welcome them to Taiwan.”
