300,000 expected at food fair

KUALA LUMPUR: Food connoisseurs will be “smacking their lips” when this year’s Fabulous Food 1Malaysia is showcased.
The three-month campaign will begin next month with the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival (MIGF) 2012. That event will see 30 of Malaysia’s finest restaurants participating.

Malaysia’s food ambassador Chef Wan will lead seven renowned chefs from the region on an Asean Heritage Food Trail in November, while December will see hawker centres from 13 states premiering their best fares at the Restaurant and Street Food Festival.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, who launched the campaign yesterday, said that this year’s festival could attract about 300,000 visitors and garner RM4.6mil in sales. Last year’s campaign saw 233,000 visitors, she added.

Dr Ng said that since the campaign’s debut in 2009, the festival had been gaining in popularity and served as a major tourist attraction for the country. “The campaign reflects the best of the 1Malaysia spirit as it unites the various races and cultures,” she said during the launch at the Golden Chersonese Mediahall in Maju Junction Mall here yesterday.

Dr Ng said three signature dishes would be promoted this year. “These will be announced at my ministry’s Hari Raya open house.” It will be held tomorrow in Precinct 5, Putrajaya. Last year’s signature dishes were rendang, nasi briyani and char koey teow.
