Malaysia set to play host for international Muay Thai battle

Malaysia will be playing host to an epic Muay Thai battle that will feature two local heroes and four internationally renowned fighters. The Thailand vs Challenger Series (TVC) lands in Malaysia for the first time following its success in Thailand, Germany and Dubai.
Event organiser Elite Boxing confirmed that TVC will be taking place on Oct 9 at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. “Outside of Thailand, Malaysia is one of the most passionate countries when it comes to Muay Thai and we are delighted to bring a Thai team to take on a mixed Asian team that includes two of Malaysia’s best fighters,” said Elite Boxing’s managing director Toli Markis referring to Mohd Ali Yaakub and Faizal ‘Golden Elbows’ Ramli.

Ali, who will be a member of the Asian team this year, won the first ever TVC event when he defeated Sornthong of Thailand in Bangkok back in 2010. Meanwhile, Faizal represented Malaysia in the Challenger Muaythai reality show.
The main fight of TVC Malaysia will feature the winner of the Challenger Muay Thai reality show Madsua of Thailand who will face off against Mosi from Iran. Malaysian Muay Thai Association president Datuk Muhd Shahnaz Azmi said the event is set to boost the sport’s popularity across Malaysia.
“Malaysia are bidding to be host for the 2014 International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur World Championship and we believe that TVC will help build the support for the bid,” he said. “Muay Thai will be contested in the 2013 Sea Games and we have also started grassroot programmes to develop the sport. Events such as TVC will be instrumental in our efforts to popularise the sport outside of the east coast,” he further added.

World Muay Thai Council vice president Stephan Fox said Muaythai is set to grow as a sport as the council has been championing for the sport to be included in the Olympics. “Eighty percent of those who practice Muay Thai as a fitness regime are women. “The sport is also used globally to give street kids a purpose in life,” said Fox. It was understood that 60% of street kids (homeless children) will resort to a life of crime and 20% will be murderers.
To add glamour to the event, popular TV host and model Diana Danielle was also present as Elite Boxing’s official ambassador. The Muay Thai enthusiast advised all women to pick-up the sport as it can be used as self-defence.
TVC is a high-profile international Muay Thai boxing event, which pits the greatest boxers in Thailand against top contenders from other countries. The event was established to provide world-class martial arts entertainment that caters to 600 million people across 180 countries.
