International magicians ready to entertain

Genting International Magic Festival 2012’s heart-stopping launch over a month ago still has people talking about it till today.
The death-defying straitjackets stunt by two of Asia’s premier illusionists — JC Sum and ‘Magic Babe’ Ning — at Maxims Genting open-air carpark has generated the desired buzz for the festival that ends on Sept 9. The International Magic Festival at Resorts World Genting consists of three unique events, namely the International Buskers, International Magic Factory and the main highlight of the festival, the Superstars of Magic 2.
The International Magic Factory, at Universal Walk in First World Plaza, features magic props from more than eight international magic vendors who have set up booths to demonstrate magic tricks and the props involved. The magic carnival and its live demonstrations will be at the Times Square’s stage. The Magic Factory and carnival will end on Sept 2.

The prime event of the festival — Superstars of Magic 2 — is back once again to provide more jaw-dropping stunts and awesome magic performances. It is directed and produced by David Lai, one of the most prominent and unique entertainers in Malaysia and who introduced the pioneer Superstars of Magic show last year. The fresh Superstars of Magic 2, to be staged until Sept 9, will showcase eight award-winning acts from around the world.
Besides JC Sum and Magic Babe Ning, the other spellbinding performers are Dean Gunnarson, Charlie Frye & Co., Christian Lindemann, Chipper Lowell, Nestor Hato, Sos & Victoria Petrosyan, and Sos & Tigran Junior. Gunnarson became the only escape artist in history to be presented with “The Houdini Award” and is acknowledged as the “World’s Greatest Escape Artist” on television in Japan. Among his monumental awards include being voted as one of the top variety acts in the world on the television show Bella Fresca in Italy and has appeared in two NBC TV Specials World’s Most Dangerous Magic Iand II.
Sum and Ning are just as illustrious, winning the magic world’s coveted Merlin Award Medal. The duo are expected to perform something unconventional as the show’s finale.
Lindemann, “Europe’s Best Pickpocket,” is Germany’s only magician in Cirque du Soleil as a headliner. He has also been named “Artist of the Year” for the best variety act. He is a master at engaging the crowd, and his act is packed with humour.
Also bound to keep the audience in stitches is Frye & Company. The silent Frye, who looks like Dick Van Dyke and moves like Charlie Chaplin, is great at juggling despite the minimal support from his “company,” in this case spouse Sherry who is more concerned about filing her nails than helping her hapless hubby.
This vaudeville-rooted performance has appeared on popular television programmes in more than 30 countries. Frye has performed for the Monaco royal family numerous times.
Superstars of Magic 2 tickets are priced at RM250 (VIP), RM130 (PS1), RM90 (PS2) and RM60 (PS3) for adults; tickets for children are priced at RM100 (VIP), RM65 (PS1), RM45 (PS2) and RM30 (PS3). Genting WorldCard members enjoy a 20% discount. The Magic Workshop is held from Aug 24 to 26, Aug 31 to Sept 2 and Sept 7 to 9, 2pm to 3pm at Genting International Convention Centre (GICC).
