Tourism Ministry launches carnival with fanfare in shopping mall

Hundreds of shoppers thronged Queensbay Mall for the launch of the northern region’s 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival 2012, which is on until Sept 2.

Themed ‘It’s All About Italy’, the event saw shoppers greeted by a life-size Colosseum at the main atrium of the mall in Penang. Guests were also mesmerised by the dazzling performance of the Venice Masquerade dancers on stage.

Shutterbugs were also kept busy when ‘Gladiators’ and ‘Roman Goddesses’ made their special appearances in eye-catching attires. The mall’s centre manager Selina Ng said that a series of contests, events and redemptions have been lined up for the carnival. “The main highlight is the grand prize of a 10-day trip for two to Italy,” she said.

Tourism Ministry deputy director- general Datuk Azizan Noordin, who launched the event recently, lauded the mall’s effort in promoting retail shopping and the tourism industry in the region. “Some 30% of the tourism revenue comes from shopping almost each year and we hope this carnival could satisfy shoppers,” he said.

After the launching, visitors were entertained with cultural dances and fashion shows with the models showcasing the latest collection of Italian-designed jewellery. Retail outlets at the mall will be offering discounts of between 10% and 70% during the sale.
