Holiday season spells good news for hotels

Several hotels in Penang have been enjoying a high occupancy rate due to the two-week mid-year school holidays which started on May 26 and ends this Sunday. Besides foreign tourists, locals are also taking advantage of the holidays to visit Penang which was named the country’s most liveable city for two consecutive years in a study by global consulting firm ECA International.
A check with Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa showed that bookings have increased since the holidays started. “The occupancy rate was higher last Saturday due to Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday which was a public holiday,” said its reservation officer Hasdurawati Hassan. “More local tourists are also coming in as we are offering the ‘Local Residence Rate’ which is cheaper than the normal rate. “Today, we have about 80% occupancy rate and it’s slowing down tomorrow and Sunday as schools re-open on Monday. “We also have an influx of Middle East tourists.”
Hard Rock Hotel Penang marketing and communications manager Elisa Saw said the hotel was seeing a 100% occupancy rate for its 250 rooms for this weekend. “Our rooms were also fully booked last weekend and it’s definitely because of the holiday season,” she said. “However, the occupancy rate during the weekdays is slower at about 80%,” she said.
Over in the city, Cititel Hotel is also experiencing an increase in their occupancy rate. “About 80% of our rooms are booked today but bookings should slow down in the next two days as the school holidays will be over. “Usually, we’ll have an influx of local tourists during the school holidays in May, June, September, November and December,” said its marketing services executive Goh Kay Ling.
