Rotary in green Borneo campaign

THE Rotary Club of Victoria Singapore, the United Nations Association of Singapore (Unas) and the Rotary Club of Miri will be organising a Preserve Planet Earth campaign called Sustainable Borneo in Miri in March next year. The two-day seminar and exhibition is meant to create understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, education and the eradication of poverty in developing nations.
It is also to protect the environment and improve the quality of life as stated in the UN’s Millennium Development Goals adopted by world leaders in 2000.

Sustainable Borneo aims to raise awareness on Borneo’s natural wonders and diverse biodiversity, lifestyle, arts and music besides promoting Borneo as an eco and business tourism destination. According to Unas director Yap Kwong Weng, the major topics at the seminar and exhibition would be on sustainable environment in Borneo, promoting green technology and to increase volunteerism among society. “Through this campaign, we hope to engage youths, private sectors, Rotarians and other non-governmental organisations to collaborate with the government and mobilise global science, technology and knowledge in order to create sustainable communities,” said Yap. “The campaign also calls on the private sector to build caring brands that focuses on the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit in order to create a new responsible economy,” Yap added.

The exact venue of the event is yet to be confirmed and Yap added that there would be ongoing media exposure to draw more participation. Miri City Mayor Lawrence Lai, during the press conference yesterday, said: “Miri is proud to be hosting this event as it is the best way to increase awareness among the public especially youths here and to increase their ties with their peers from other parts of the world.” Under the Sustainable Village programme, Rotarians, Mercy Malaysia, Unas and volunteers had conducted a recce mission to a Penan village Long Luar, which was first adopted under the programme, from Dec 11-13 to identify the various needs of the villagers. Under the mission, a mobile clinic was organised by Mercy Malaysia Sarawak Chapter and sponsored by UMW.
