Test drive - The colour of the night

Berjaya Redang Resort is the only property on the island offering night snorkeling. S Puvaneswary dives in to gauge the difference

WHY Snorkeling at night provides a visually different perspective. Coral colours look richer at night when bathed in the glow of  torchlights. A good guide would also help spot those maritime creatures that do not make an appearance in daytime.

WHAT Night snorkeling has to be done in a controlled environment as it is pitch black out at sea. All six of us in our group had a personal instructor each to guide us and point out interesting aquatic life at the Redang Marine Park. Those in our group who could not swim hung on to car tubes. Doing so gave a greater sense of confidence, especially in deep waters. During our dip, we were lucky enough to see baby sharks, parrot fish, nemo and the yellowtail barracuda.
I was surprised that the sea was deliciously warm and not freezing cold as I had expected it to be. The only chill came when we stepped out of the water into a cool night breeze.

HOW Snorkelers are transported by boat to two sites, the marine park that is a 15-minute ride out, and Pasor Akar, some eight minutes from the marine park. The programme runs daily for an hour but operations are subject to weather and sea conditions.

VERDICT Made even more invaluable by helpful instructors.
